Editing

The Human-First SEO Editing Checklist

Review for the reader first, then make the search signals cleaner and more specific.

SEO editing works best as two connected reviews. The first asks whether the page deserves a reader's attention. The second makes the subject and relationships easy for search systems to interpret. Reversing that order often produces text that contains the right phrases but feels strangely empty.

Pass one: the reader's experience

Does the opening earn the next paragraph?

The introduction should identify the problem, establish relevance and make a clear promise. Remove scene-setting that could appear on any page. Start close to the reason the reader arrived.

Is the answer specific?

Replace broad claims with examples, steps, evidence and boundaries. “Improve your content” is vague. “Assign one search intent to each page before drafting” gives the reader something to do.

Does the structure match the task?

Arrange sections in the order a person needs them. Definitions precede advanced decisions. Criteria precede recommendations. A process follows a sequence. Headings should reveal that route when read on their own.

Can the voice survive being read aloud?

Listen for repeated sentence patterns, inflated transitions and words the business would never use in conversation. Vary pace. Prefer direct verbs. Remove claims that sound confident only because they lack detail.

Pass two: search clarity

Is the primary intent unmistakable?

The title, main heading, introduction and core sections should agree about the page's purpose. They do not need to repeat one exact phrase, but they should describe the same subject and outcome.

Are related terms used where they add precision?

Include the language people use for components, problems, alternatives and outcomes. Do not add a synonym simply because a tool surfaced it. Add it when it helps explain the subject accurately.

Do internal links help the journey?

Link to prerequisite information, deeper detail and relevant next steps. Use anchor text that tells the reader what they will find. Remove links inserted only to hit a count.

Are search snippets honest and useful?

The title should identify the page and create a reason to choose it. The description should summarise the benefit without making a promise the page cannot keep. Both should stay distinct from other pages on the site.

The final checklist

  • The first screen makes the subject and benefit clear.
  • Every section adds new information.
  • Claims are supported by evidence or explanation.
  • Headings describe the content beneath them.
  • The primary intent stays consistent throughout the page.
  • Keywords appear naturally and never interrupt the sentence.
  • Links describe useful destinations.
  • Images have a purpose and accurate alternative text.
  • The call to action fits what the reader is ready to do.
  • The page sounds like a person with knowledge of the subject.
Editing test: if removing a sentence changes nothing, remove it. If adding a keyword makes the sentence worse, rewrite the thought rather than forcing the phrase.
