SEO Optimization: How Do Search Engines Really Work?

by Dean Clarke

Are you one of those who assume that, because of the many Google Penguin alerts, SEO optimization is a mine-infested war field?

As an e-commerce businessman, with the appearance of search engine optimization, have you lost faith in anything?

Indeed, search engine optimization ( SEO) is one issue that many webmasters are having problems with these days. Not far-fetched is the reason. In the recent past, Google has been very tough on SEO activities that verge on black-hat or grey-hat tactics. This has led many e-commerce sites to lose their search rankings and, as a result, traffic and income.

But does this make you really turn away from optimising the search engine? Does this justify the many hideous labels that have been put on something relevant to the optimization of your search engine websites?

In fact, search engine optimization is something that every webmaster, content marketing specialist, social media consultant, blogger, or whatever other name we want to be recognised by, is involved in every day, consciously or unconsciously. Even if we do not realise it, we are actually optimising for the search engines whenever we build some type of content for the site!

I want to help you understand how search engines function in this article, so you will not only appreciate the need for search engine optimization better when you do it, but you will also know how to do it!

Optimization for Search Engines Is Not Beyond You!

To many, SEO optimization can seem like something that only a particular community of high-tech SEO experts have the privacy to do. But that truly isn’t the truth. You will come to learn that getting into Google’s good books (and most of the other search engines, for that matter) is really not an issue if you just know how the search engines function. The good news is that you won’t have any questions about any potential updates that Google wants to release if you have this right!

Yes, optimising the search engine might seem a complicated subject, but that’s only if you want to move into the realm of arm-twisting the search engines to give you what you know is not due to you. However, ranking on the search engines and driving targeted traffic from the search engines can really be a thing of joy, with a simple understanding of what is going on in the mind of the search engines and a dedication to some simple work to make the web pages fit with that ideal situation!

How Search Engines Work

Looking at their components is the best way to understand how search engines function. Basically, 3 pieces of software make up a search engine. They are:

1. The App for The Spider

2. The App for Index

And … and …

3. The Program for Questions.

Now, let ‘s look at these 3 components briefly.

1. The App for The Spider

This is the feature of the search engine that is most commonly referred to by many SEOs. For several, the search engine “crawls” the web to gather and index fresh web sites. But the truth is that the spiders of the search engine do not “crawl” or “visit” any page. What they do instead is, like your usual web explorer, they request website pages and send them to the index programme for review when they receive this information!

I ‘m sure many would be puzzled by the above assertion because they were made to believe that the spiders “crawl” around the web searching for information to collect! But you must realise that the “crawling” of spiders on the web is just figurative. For example, when your website has new content, the search engine spider does not “crawl” to retrieve the new information from your website. Instead, the search engine spider simply “sends” a request to your site based on the number of visits you have set for your website and if there is any new material, the material is added to the search engine indexes.

I would point out here that this is where it is really important to ping the search engines anytime you add new material to your site. Doing so would automatically alert the search engines that some new material for compilation is available on your site. This way, in a matter of minutes after being linked to your website or blog, your website material will get into the search indices. You can actually do this automatically with the use of plugins if you are using the wordpress blogging platform for your pages.

Another thing that you need to remember about search engine spiders is that they don’t collect or format photos. The text and links and, of course, the urls connected to the content are all that they care about. Logos and photos in the “alt tag” should be defined by text, otherwise the spiders will ignore them. Flash should also be fully discouraged.

2. The App for Index

This can be represented as the search engine ‘s brain. What this programme does is take all the text , links and urls that have been collected by the spider programme, find out what they are all about, categorise them and organise them accordingly.

The index programme uses a complex mathematical formula called an algorithm to index terms, word pairs, phrases, etc. and then place a score on them so that it can easily decide which of the content and url is applicable to that search when anyone uses the search engine when searching for some information!

Now, if you understand this, you can come to understand why keywords / phrases are still an essential component of the development of your content since they allow the search engines to correctly identify and index your content.

For example, if I search for “content writing services” using Google, only the web pages containing that phrase and sometimes other related words will be returned. But pages based on “bicycle fixes” will never be returned! For an illustration, take a look at this graphic:

3.

The App for Question In reality, this is what the average individual considers as a search engine.

When you want to use a search engine to look for details, that is what you see. What this programme does is this: it takes your query if you do a search and looks at the indexed information gathered by the spider programme and carefully organised by the index software and then pulls out the web page with the content that fits your query best.

It’s like asking your secretary to get details for you about a specific topic.

Of course, what the secretary will actually do is take the request from a file containing that information and get that information. That is the same thing that search engines do if you ask them for information! Now, you have to understand something here; the search engines do not “search the internet” to get you the results, as is falsely assumed.

What they do is basically go through the records that have been created by the index programme and then find the best fit for your question. This is crucial because they must first be indexed by the search engine for your web pages to be distributed to people who are searching. But having your content indexed in the first place (text, links and urls) is something you have to work at. Optimization Takeaway for SEO Keywords

Search engines have well-analyzed and indexed billions and billions of data.

But they can only make it accessible when anyone searches for information from the search engine. Therefore, SEO keyword optimization is a way to ensure that the correct keywords or phrases are used by individuals to ask the search engines for your website or blog content. It’s true that Google has been tough on many SEO practises in recent times, but that doesn’t mean it’s a dead game to optimise your content for search engines.
